Start with the fabric, then the garment

Linen is made from flax; cotton comes from the cotton plant. That distinction alone does not tell you exactly how a shirt or pair of trousers will feel. The weave, fabric weight, finish and any blended fibres also affect the finished garment.

Look closely at the product photographs. Notice the surface texture, how the fabric falls at the sleeve or hem, and whether the design is structured or relaxed. Check the written composition for a blend rather than assuming a garment is made entirely from the fibre in its name.

For shirts and everyday separates

A textured shirt can become the focal point of a simple outfit. A smoother fabric can sit quietly alongside patterned or pleated pieces. Compare the collar, sleeve shape and length as well as the material before deciding how you will wear it.
